Pop Star Nadja Benaissa Convicted of Spreading HIV
She rose to fame as a member of the German pop music group No Angels, but Nadja Benaissa is making news for something quite different as of late.
The 28-year-old singer was convicted on charges of causing grievous bodily harm and attempted bodily harm in a German court today for failing to tell her sexual partners that she is HIV positive.
Benaissa has known her HIV status since 1999 and ended up infecting one of her lovers with the virus by way of unprotected sex. She was given a suspended two-year jail sentence.
In a statement to the court, Nadja said, “I am sorry from the heart.” She also explained that she didn’t tell anyone about her illness for fear of tainting her pop group’s reputation and harming her daughter.
