He’s getting all kinds of attention for all the wrong reasons, and Manti Te’o stopped by “Katie” to chat with host Katie Couric about his highly unusual “girlfriend” hoax.
The Notre Dame football star was previously involved in a false relationship with a woman who actually didn’t exist, and when she supposedly died of cancer he was understandably devastated.
However, once he found out that it was all fake, Manti ended up lying to the media in order to try and preserve some of his little remaining dignity.
Katie began, “You stuck to the script. And you knew that something was amiss, Manti,” to which Te’o replied, "Katie, put yourself in my situation. I, my whole world told me that she died on Sept. 12. Everybody knew that. This girl, who I committed myself to, died on Sept. 12.”
"Now I get a phone call on Dec. 6, saying that she's alive and then I'm going be put on national TV two days later. And to ask me about the same question. You know, what would you do?"
Couric also asked Manti’s parents, "Now many people writing about this are calling your son a liar. They are saying he manipulated the truth, really for personal gain.”
Proud papa Brian shot back, "People can speculate about what they think he is. I've known him 21 years of his life. And he's not a liar. He's a kid."
