He’s an icon in the realm of broadcast journalism, and earlier this week Walter Cronkite passed away at the age of 92.

Cronkite was a CBS news anchorman who chronicled many of the most important and far-reaching events of the 1900s. Born in 1916, Walter began his journey by working on his high school newspaper.

By the time 1939 rolled around, Cronkite was in Europe as a war correspondent for the United Press, covering the D-Day invasion, Nuremberg Trials, and the Battle of the Bulge.

In 1963, Walter broke the news of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, and just six years later he covered the American moon landing.

Cronkite is survived by three children, Nancy, Kathy, and Walter III as well as four grandchildren.
