Emma Roberts and Jamie-Lynn Spears Do Nancy Drew

The movie version of 'Nancy Drew' opens in theaters this coming Friday. The film, titled Nancy Drew: The Mystery in Hollywood Hills, staged its premiere on Saturday (June 9), drawing the films star Emma Roberts, along with Jamie-Lynn Spears and a horde of teens eager for the film's release.

The big talk surrounding the movie centers not on the plot, but the fashion! Fashion industry experts expect to see a step away from the current trends inspired by the likes of Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan (thank goodness!), moving towards "drop-waist skirts and dresses, capped sleeves, penny loafers, bright colors and plaid prints."

“We took styles from every decade and mixed them into an amalgam of what Nancy’s style became,” set costume designer Jeffrey Kurland noted. “In the books, she likes things that are old-fashioned.”

To freshen up the retro look outlined in past Nancy Drew books, Kurland "cut the clothes close to the body, so they wouldn’t seem baggy or frumpy."

And while Nancy’s wardrobe was custom-made for the film (making certain items hard to find), similar elements of the New Sincerity style are already in stores like American Eagle and J. Crew - awaiting the boom after the movie's release.

“It’s a very old-fashioned, pretty style that’s become classic over the years,” says Gloria Baume, fashion director of Teen Vogue.

“Proper clothes like pleated skirts and vests can be hard to wear,” Baume adds, “but putting elements of it in your wardrobe makes it cute, not nerdy or old-fashioned.”
