Live Earth: Al Gore's Global Party

Posted Sunday July 8, 2007 3:41 PM GMT

As reported previously by the Gossip Girls, the series of Live Earth concerts across seven continents got started off with a bang yesterday (July 7). Just 24 hours later, the global party has come to an end - but the hope is that the event's message will live on for quite some time to come.

Live Earth was organized by former Vice President Al Gore with the goal of raising awareness about global warming. With over 100 musical acts joining in on the cause, the entertainers played to the crowds - with many offering up messages to the over 2 billion people expected to experience the shows through television, radio and the Internet.

"There's a lot of talk about saving energy," Madonna told the Wembley Stadium crowd while introducing her song "Ray of Light." "But right now I don't want anyone to conserve your energy. I want to see this whole stadium jumping!"

Meanwhile, back at New Jersey's Giants Stadium, Gore told the cheering crowd "You are Live Earth!" amidst performances by a lineup including: the Police, Dave Matthews Band, Kelly Clarkson, Kanye West, Alicia Keys, John Mayer, Bon Jovi and Ludacris.

And in a final plea, Gore closed with: "Today, two billion of us have come together in over 130 countries on seven continents. Times like these demand action: please sign the Live Earth pledge."

Now we'll wait and see whether Gore's massive efforts pay off.
